I’m fascinated by the ancient’s imagination in combining known animals and in making such an effort to capture them in stone and pottery decoration with such repeatability that it makes me wonder about a simpler explanation for the consistently described forms of the centaur; the gryphon; the unicorn etc. which remain significant myths today. The number of combinations seems limited and their descriptions are well established; there’s enough precision in these depictions to allow analysis and comparison to the extent that changes, due to loss of understanding, can be determined and when that change occurred. I can’t help thinking of one of the the reasons for the deluge in the Old Testament was the ‘corruption of all flesh’. Does this indicate the possibility of these myths representing actual cross-bred animals? It makes sense that the symbolism has been corrupted and turned on its head. There are many once holy and venerated sites of "The Old Ways" in Britain where the names have been demonised - most likely by an incoming and "new" religion. For example what is now known as "the Devil's Chair" at the great megalithic stone complex of Avebury in England, was likely "the Great Goddesses Chair" or something similar in its original intention by my reckoning: A representation of connection with the land and honouring the divine in nature in order to maintain fertility. There are many other similar examples of things having been 'turned on their head', especially in relation to once sacred feminine words or sites having been corrupted, demonised or toxified ( I write this as a man ). Wherever one finds reference to 'devil' or similar, in regard to ancient sites or place names right across Europe, one can generally be assured of finding a place of special, and indeed in my experience, holy nature, harking back to earlier times.
Significantly, 'The Old Ways' venerated the goat as Pan - wild nature spirit - and the serpent or snake as a representation of female wisdom and the ability to learn and grow by shedding skins - as a snake does. Both the goat god Pan and the serpent have been demonised by later religions. Similarly the dragon - slain by a valiant knight - could quite possibly be the sublimation of the dragon energies of the earth (and of the Divine Feminine) by a later belief system. Just a personal view. There may or may not be anything in it. However, it ties in remarkably well with the ideas in the article. Wonderful stuff - thanks for posting. I was searching around for references to draw the chimera and I noticed that many artists depict it as a winged creature but the medieval references i found don't mention the chimera being a winged creature. I never would have thought the goat head being a misinterpretation for wings, I think that's a really cool concept! It was at some moment during the Middle Ages, but it is hard to pinpoint exactly when. Worth some research.

About the second question, I am not aware of any interpretation in this sense. But it is always possible to add new interpretations to a rich myth such as the Chimera one

Finally, about similar sites, well, the Internet is packed with information of all sorts, but I wouldn't know where exactly to address you. You can have a good time googling!

Ugo Bardihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18231859786466899924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1628199365429496193.post-1687484301148844992016-10-01T19:11:47.772-07:002016-10-01T19:11:47.772-07:00Awesome stuff Ugo! I had been looking for somethin...Awesome stuff Ugo! I had been looking for something like this for a long time. Really Really useful!

I have 3 inquiries though:

1. I understand that the chimera is nowadays used by many, as a symbolism for something that can't exist or something that can't be achieved. I have read all the articles at: http://www.surfchem.unifi.it/solid/bardi/chimera/ but I haven't found details about the transition, or maybe I missed it. Do you the story of how the classic chimera transitioned to this latest concept?

2. Has any scholar ever considered the possibility that the lion and snake are protecting the goat? We know that goats are aggressive sometimes and don't lack braveness, but they aren't as fierce and lethal as the lion and snake. So, my suggestion is that the goat is always guarded by the lion in the front and the snake in the back.

3. Lastly... this is not related to the chimera, but understanding that finding such amazing collection of serious information about these kind of subjects is hard to find. Do you know by chance similar websites to yours where I could find a collection of data about these mythological creatures?

- Dragons
- Basilisk
- Phoenix

In any case... The image of the Chimera may also have been repurposed to represent the Devil: he masquerades as the goodness of Christ (the lion front) but the back is made of two other creatures more closely associated with the Devil himself, the goat (in the common depictions of Satan as having the cloven hooves, horns, and beard like a goat) and the snake (the image of Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13457405943277634544noreply@blogger.com
